You may have already heard the hype from critics that this live adaptation of the Disney classic is a masterpiece. Are they right?
Before we get to the many reasons why this is so, we need to discuss the most important one. The visual effects. Ok….so we can all agree that talking tigers don’t exist. Right? RIGHT? Because I’m pretty sure I just watched an actual talking tiger. A TALKING TIGER. It has to be real. What I just saw was REAL I tell you! The effects on this Idris Elba-voiced (grrrrr!) beast of orange and black are so good that they need to come up with something better than an Oscar to give to the special effects guy. Well done you. Well done.
The tiger isn’t the only animal that looks like a talking dream come true. Most of the animals look real. Super real. Freakishly real. Are they real? As real as they can be next to a non-CGI boy…and this boy. IS. ADORABLE. I’d like to adopt him. Can I? Whoever the casting director is needs to put this movie at the top of their resume. Perfect casting.
Ok so the effects are great. So what? Great effects do not a good movie make. Well, this movie has it all. It has heart. Lots of it. I cried at least five times. It has laughs. Bill Murray is the voice of Baloo the bear. Enough said. It has song. You know the ones. *starts whistling* Where most remakes fail to tell a beloved story in a new and intriguing way, this one succeeds.
I could bumble on with fancy words describing how great this movie is, but you don’t need that. You just need to go see it. It’s great for kids (may be slightly scary at certain points for the very wee ones), great for adults, great for teens, great for EVERYONE.
You’ll enjoy this if you enjoyed: Life of Pi, Avatar, The Lion King, and…the original Jungle Book…obviously.
