Around this time of year, most of the movies in theaters are the ones vying for Oscar nominations. Then you have a movie like Passengers. A big budget blockbuster starring two of the most popular actors in Hollywood. This is the type you see when you just want to escape, eat a giant bucket of popcorn, and be entertained for two hours. Passengers does the trick.
Before I go on about why I liked this movie, I need to touch on the whole “rape culture” thing. SPOILER ALERT. Critics are having a conniption over the fact that Jennifer Lawrence’s character, Aurora, is woken up by Chris Pratt’s character, Jim. When the film was first announced, that was how the plot was described – “A spacecraft is transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet that has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result, a single passenger is awakened 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger.”
To all those complaining…what exactly would you do in this situation? You’d wake up another passenger! Or at least struggle really hard with the idea, which is exactly what Chris Pratt’s character does. He struggles really hard with it. He isn’t a bad guy. He isn’t planning to rape her. He isn’t planning to “force” her to fall in love with him (that’s not an actual thing). You know what….I’ve spent way too long on this argument. Moving on. Everyone needs to stop being so damn sensitive.
In a nutshell: this is a light and entertaining movie. There is humor. There is action. There is romance. There are two gorgeous people to stare at. It is a simple plot to follow. Michael Sheen plays a robot bartender. What more do you want?
If you are looking for a deep, psychological thriller set in space, this is not it. If you are offended by the plot, take a chill pill and eat some chocolate or something. You know you’d wake up Jennifer Lawrence too. Don’t lie.
If you are looking to just sit back and enjoy some beautiful people running around in space…go see this.
