In honor of all the amazing Dads out there, I’ve put together a list of my favorite movie Dad heroes:
Liam Neeson (as Bryan Mills) in TAKEN
A good Dad is one who will save you from becoming a sex slave in a foreign country…and destroy anyone and everyone involved in your kidnapping. Sure it may take a “particular set of skills” but it also takes will and determination, another great quality a Dad should have.
Tom Cruise (as Ray Ferrier) in WAR OF THE WORLDS
While he may need some lessons on parenting in the real world, when aliens come to threaten the lives of his children, he steps up to the plate to become super Dad and does anything he must to protect them. A great Dad makes hard choices to protect his kids, from letting his son join the Marines to help save the world, to taking a crazy man’s life in order to save his daughter. He might not know how to cook a meal, but he will save you from aliens.
Liam Neeson (as Jean Valjean) in Les Misérables
In this version of the classic story, Jean Valjean has no time for singing. He risks his life to give his adopted daughter Cosette privilege and comfort, and most importantly love. Despite all the opportunities given to him, he still chooses the path of goodness.
Dwayne Johnson (as Ray) in SAN ANDREAS
Ok…this guy might have Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson in Taken) beat for Dad of the century. The Rock plays the greatest Super Dad of all time in San Andreas, determined to rescue his daughter after a devastating earthquake hits San Francisco. A Super Dad does the following: saves your Mom from a falling building, crashes a helicopter, steals a car, steals a plane, jumps out of the plane, steals a boat, drives that boat over a tsunami, dives into filthy debris filled water, etc. Have fun beating that.
King Triton in THE LITTLE MERMAID
Great Dads….let you go. If you didn’t cry during this scene of The Little Mermaid, then you definitely need some help.
Roy Scheider as (Chief Brody) in JAWS
Great Dads…save you from sharks. Period.
Roberto Benigni (as Guido Orifice) in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL
A great Dad uses humor to shield you from the horrors of war. In Life is Beautiful, Guido uses all his will and might to protect his son’s innocence when both are captured and sent to a concentration camp.
Marlin in FINDING NEMO
A great Dad befriends the most unlikely characters in order to save his son from evil humans. He conquers his fears and opens his heart. Something every great Dad should do for his children.
Mr. Incredible – THE INCREDIBLES
The picture and the name alone are enough to prove what a great Dad this guy is. All Dads can be heroes….even the goofy ones.
Robin Williams in MRS. DOUBTFIRE
A great Dad is one who will dress up as an old lady and take on the Mom role in order to spend time with his kids.
Denzel Washington in JOHN Q
A great Dad will hold a hospital hostage in order to get you a heart. That is some love right there. An even greater Dad…will try to give you his own heart to save your life. Wow.
Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Not only is he a single Dad, but he teaches some of the most important lessons every child should learn: to look beyond the color of someone’s skin or outer appearance and judge a person by what’s inside.
While all these Dads are pretty darn great…I’d rather have my Dad any day. He may not have saved me from aliens (yet), or rescued me from crazy sex slavers, or saved me from sharks, or an earthquake, or nazis…but he is still my hero.
Happy Father’s Day!!
