Since my Desolation of Smaug review was so long, I’ll try to keep this one short. Which won’t be too hard with this movie. (No spoilers in this one either).
The first thing I need to address is Jennifer Lawrence. She is going to get another Oscar for this movie. Guaranteed. She is beyond phenomenal in this role. It might be one of the greatest performances of all time. A combination of Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface and Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny. But ten times better. Just brilliant.
The other star of the film is the costuming. Fabbity fab fab! 70’s disco attire at its finest. I’ve had an overwhelming desire to wear sequins and fur coats since the trailer hit. And boy do Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence rock those dresses like nobody’s business! But what is with Jennifer Lawrence’s hair? Did they actually wear that hairstyle in the 70’s? Who cares. It is awesome. Doing it.
Basically, this film can only be described with one word. SEXY. Whether it is because of the gorgeous actresses, their attire, and their provocative roles, or the film’s plot and characters. It is a film about con artists. People screwing each other over. People losing their shit. People doing truly despicable things. People being really pathetic. What is sexier than that?
The soundtrack is awesome. One of the best of the year. It is just damn cool. Even Jennifer Lawrence rocks out to one of the songs in the film (best scene in the whole movie). And after a particular night club scene, my new goal is to go out dancing to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love.”
Now if you were to ask me what exactly happens in the movie and what happened at the end, I couldn’t really tell you in detail. People get scammed. Screwed over. Etc. Don’t ask me questions. I’m not exactly sure. But this movie is not driven by the plot. It is driven by the performances of Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner. Period. They are all incredible. The only other film this year that offers any sort of competition when it comes to acting is 12 Years A Slave. These two films are gonna go head to head. At least in the supporting actor and actress categories. I have a feeling it will come down to Lawrence and Fassbender though. They are your winners.
Anyway, American Hustle is cool, sexy, and funny. What more do you want in a movie? Definitely worth the ticket price. Go see it!
