I’ll keep this one simple. When I first saw the original Thor movie, I was not thrilled. Then I watched it a few more times and started to really like it. Then The Avengers happened and I was hooked. My excitement for the Thor sequel was now much higher. Because honestly……it is all comes down to the fantastic character that is Loki (played by the equally fantastic and far better actor than most everyone in the movie, Tom Hiddleston).
I’ll save you more reading and just come out with it. I LOVED The Dark World. Now go see it.
Ok……now here is why. I’ve grown emotionally attached to these characters (except Jane Foster, I could care less about her). I want to see what happens next in the Thor vs. Loki saga. Mostly I just want to know what happens to Loki. Because he is really the star of this show. He even makes Thor a more interesting character. I like Thor a lot more when he is with Loki. They just have great chemistry.
The movie is nothing groundbreaking. It is kind of cheesy at times, the visual effects can get a bit cartoony, and it is your typical “bad guy ruins things and good guy must save the day” storyline. The first 20 minutes of the film had me a bit worried. It seemed like it was going in a bad direction, a stupid direction, and might turn into a really dumb sequel. Thankfully, it didn’t, and it got really good. This is of course thanks to Loki. The interactions between him and Thor make this movie. They are hysterical. Sibling rivalry at a super power level. Such fun. It makes up for any annoyance displayed by Natalie Portman’s pointless filler romantic damsel in distress character. They really should just get rid of her altogether and stick in half an hour more of Loki plot. Or Sif plot (Jaimie Alexander). Or Heimdall plot (Idris Elba). These are all far better and more interesting characters than Jane Foster. Even her intern in the film, Darcy (Kat Dennings) is more interesting. I rest my case.
Anyway, if you like Marvel and are into the Avengers stories, you won’t be disappointed. This movie does exactly what it means to. It is entertaining. A big budget, action packed, silly and fun popcorn movie. It has the comedy elements, thanks to the charisma of Hiddleston, Dennings, Skarsgard, and newcomer Chris O’Dowd. It has the twists and turns that had me gasping and sighing with relief. It has the action (can we all just take a moment to geek out over Rene Russo’s total badassness in this movie? She kicks more ass than all the other female characters in the whole movie put together…….and in just one tiny fight scene).
Overall, this movie is definitely worth the price of a movie ticket. I even plan on seeing it again. Because it was fun and we all deserve to have a fun time at the movies.
