You may hate this movie, you may love it. If you are a fan of District 9 and sci-fi, odds are you will enjoy this one. It isn’t a perfect movie and you shouldn’t be going to see it expecting a bunch of Oscar nominations.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I am a HUGE fan of District 9, and while Elysium is not better, it still lives up to my expectations. The look and feel is very similar. That is probably the best thing it has going for it. The story is pretty straightforward and isn’t anything groundbreaking. It has its faults of course. The ending leaves you asking a bunch of what-if questions and wondering how plausible it really is. However, within the realm of logic of the film, you sort of have to just go with it and trust everything will work itself out. I can’t go into it in further detail without giving it away, so let’s just leave it at that.
The best parts of this movie:
Matt Damon is awesome. He is Jason Bourne for goodness sake. And. This. Look. Works. For. Him. Bald and prison tattoos. Yes.
The visuals are stunning. Sure there are a bit more slow motion scenes than most people can handle, but they all looked great.
The special effects and CGI are INCREDIBLE. I can’t reveal too much, but there are one or two specific scenes that blew my mind. They were completely disgusting and grotesque scenes…….but just INCREDIBLE.
SHARLTO COPLEY. You may remember him as the main character from District 9 and the weirdo from A-Team. He is just pure awesome whether he plays a goodie or a baddie. Honestly, I prefer him as a baddie………….but I just have a thing for the bad guys. He was definitely the best part of the movie.
Of course this movie has flaws. I hate to say it, but Jodie Foster was one of them. That. damn. accent. Accents normally don’t bother me. However I was just too distracted by this one. Was it a French accent? An English one? A cross between the two? No one knows. I don’t even think she knew. Jodie is fluent in French, but she could have very well kept a normal accent and still been believable. It just seemed like she tried too hard. Or not hard enough. Oh well. I can get over it. It didn’t ruin the whole movie for me. It might for you and that is just too bad.
While I am trying not to gush too much about this movie and give it too much hype, I am actually geeking out about it and waiting impatiently for it to come out so I can see it again. So there you have it. I hope you love it too.
