Surprise surprise…….I disagree with the critics again. I did like this movie, but I didn’t think it was a masterpiece like most of the critics are praising it to be.
When I say I liked it, I mean that I thought it was entertaining and not a waste of two hours. I didn’t hate it, but I also didn’t think it was the most awesome action movie of all time. The visual effects were great and hardly anything in the movie looked ridiculously fake, which is impressive for something like this. I just wasn’t blown away by the action sequences. They just felt kind of slow to me……..like those machine robots hadn’t been oiled in years and had stiff joints. Now I may have been expecting too much of a Transformers type thing, but that is just how I feel. All of it seemed done to me, nothing new. I felt like I was watching old Transformers try to beat up Godzilla’s cousins. It was fun to watch, but I wasn’t at the edge of my seat ready to pass out from stress like I was with World War Z.
The cast is pretty great however. Charlie Hunnam (aka Jax) is just one delicious piece of man. Idris Elba is badass even when he stands there saying nothing (his pre-battle speech was the best part of the movie). Rinko Kikuchi is adorable and really a great actress. Even Ron Perlman shows up for a nice little SOA reunion (although he and Jax do not have any scenes together). I’m not a huge fan of the two “funny” guys however. Charlie Day can get a giggle or two out of me, but mostly I just find him annoying and over the top. His partner (Burn Gorman) was no help. Their characters were meant to be the comedic relief, but they were just weird. I laughed out of embarrassment for them most of the time.
The plot was pretty typical. It was cheesy and silly, and honestly I would have liked less of it. The critics say there was not enough story, but I felt the opposite. I thought there was too much. Guillermo del Toro tried desperately to evoke some emotion in the audience for these characters, but I just didn’t feel anything. Therefore, I was not stressed at all or on the edge of my seat.
The music was cool, visuals were great, actors were good, etc. Overall, it was a fun summer blockbuster. I just won’t remember this as one of my favorites this year.
