Once again I disagree with the “professional” critics. While my credibility may be out the door by now if you have read some of my other reviews, I am definitely not the only person who liked this movie. Usually if the critics hate something, that gives me an almost 100% guarantee I will love it and most of the average moviegoers will too. Now that this has been said…….
I LOVED this movie. It was a blast! It had plenty of hilarious moments and plenty of fun action scenes. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer are a great pair. The only thing I would complain about is that it was a bit long. They definitely could have shaved off a good 20 minutes without screwing up the story. Still only a minor complaint. Another thing is that I would have liked to see Helena Bonham Carter in it more. She had maybe two scenes in the movie, although they were both great.
Now, for a bit of justification that I am not the only person who loved this movie, I saw it with a pretty large and diverse crowd. In front of me, was a row of teenage boys. Behind me was a row of senior citizens who all probably watched the original Lone Ranger when it was on TV. We all laughed through the whole movie. When it was over, the theater clapped and I overheard them all saying they loved it and that it was a really fun movie. Even the teenage boys. Now I am not saying that teenage boys are experts on this sort of thing, but they sure are hard to please with movies like this, in my experience. They all loved it. However, I am not really concerned about what everyone else thinks. I was really excited to see this and really hoped I would love it. It exceeded my personal expectations. So, I’m happy.
Of course, this is not a perfect movie and if you want to play the “that could never happen” game, you will have no fun. Johnny Depp plays a Native American. So obviously this movie was not going for believability. You have to watch this movie for what it is. Pure entertainment. It is very similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean style (directed and produced by the same people), with humor throughout and crazy action sequences that are only real in the movies. Critics will grumble about the politics of the movie and other stupid things that are beside the point. This movie was not made as a political statement. It was made to entertain, and it did. Period.
If you like Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean, Westerns, and animal humor………..I’ll bet you will enjoy The Lone Ranger. It seems like fans of the original really enjoyed it too, although it is nothing like the TV show and seems to make fun of it at times. I will warn parents to think before bringing their kids to see it though. I was a bit squeamish at certain points.
My final say: GO SEE IT!
P.S. Another warning………..the theme song will be stuck in your head for a while afterward. 🙂
