This review DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY SPOILERS! I will not give away any crucial plot points. You are safe!
I will get right to it then. This movie was awesome. Seriously. Awesome. It didn’t quite hit me right away though. Honestly…….for the first 20 or 30 minutes (I won’t tell you what happens or what it involves) I almost forgot I was watching a Superman movie. It felt kind of like a sequel to Avatar or Star Wars or something. As the movie continued, I was enjoying it quite a bit, but I was starting to worry, because my mind was not being blown and I felt like it wasn’t as awesome as I had anticipated. Well, by the time the movie ended, I was speechless. My mind was racing, still trying to process everything I just saw and trying to come back to the realization that Superman doesn’t actually exist and the movie was just fiction. I just sat there, through all of the credits, thinking about the whole movie and how the scenes that didn’t initially blow my mind were actually my favorite and were incredibly epic.
Now I will get to the actors. I’ll start with Henry Cavill. I don’t need to tell you how unbelievably stunning this man is. You already know. It is ridiculous. His acting however…………..pretty damn good as well. He COMPLETELY gets rid of his British accent. I mean completely. I forgot he was British. He is the best choice for Superman. I can’t think of anyone else who could have done a better job. There were a few scenes in the movie that were kind of goofy, but that comes naturally when you have to pretend like you are soaring through the air at rocket speed. As for the other actors, they were all cast perfectly. Amy Adams is just precious as Lois Lane (HURRAY for redheads!) and she is not your typical damsel in distress. Those characters are just annoying. This chick is smart, motivated, brave, and kick-ass. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are very sweet and adorable as the Kents. They make it easy to love them. Laurence Fishburne is always good in whatever he does, and I didn’t think of the Matrix once during any of his scenes. Russell Crowe……………….has been working out. Or something. Age is his friend. It could just be me. I highly doubt it though. Thankfully he is in the movie far more than I expected.
My only problem (and it is a very tiny, itty bitty, hardly even there kind of problem) was Michael Shannon. I know, I know! Michael Shannon is amazing. I absolutely love him. Incredible actor. He does do a good job as the bad guy, but because of my extremely high expectation of him, I was just a bit disappointed. ONLY A BIT! I’m not saying he is bad, or a terrible actor in this role. I just felt like there could have been more to this character. More menacing material he could have worked with. It was his female side-kick in the movie (Antje Traue) that really stole the show. This woman……….is FANTASTIC, and she has plenty of scenes in the movie to shine. I might have a little bit of a crush on her.
As for everything else in the movie, the only word that can accurately describe it all is………….EPIC. Hans Zimmer delivers another mind-blowing score, with that signature Dark Knight sound to it. The visual effects were breath-taking and there were hardly any moments in the film that I thought……”Oh that is so fake.” Actually, there were no parts in the film when I said that. Of course, there are scenes that you can tell are CGI, but not to the point of unbelievability (in the context of this film of course). The cinematography is gorgeous and Zach Snyder gives us a really beautiful looking film. It isn’t cartoony. It isn’t child-like.
I can sum up this movie in one sentence that will ultimately tell you how it is. I know I may be hyping it up a lot with all the “amazings,” and “incredibles,” and “fantastics.” You might be thinking I am just blinded by the Greek God-like figure that is Henry Cavill. I apologize if you come out of the movie disappointed, but I am willing to bet that won’t happen. Ok, here is the one sentence that sums it all up:
MAN OF STEEL DOES FOR SUPERMAN, WHAT DARK KNIGHT DID FOR BATMAN.
