I was very privileged to be able to attend the screening of People Like Us at the Seattle Film Festival on June 4th, where Chris Pine and director Alex Kurtzman attended and answered questions after the show. It was a nice addition to the movie, finding out the truth behind the story and the inspiration for writing it.
This was not a movie I was excited to see. Sure, I would have watched it eventually on DVD because of Mr. Pine, but it was not my first choice when going to the theater. Main reason I actually paid to see it was for the Q&A with the director and star.
I was pleasantly surprised however. It is a small movie…………no explosions, no car chases, no evil queens. 😉 This is a character movie with the simple filming of two or more people reading a dialogue. This may sound boring and slow………but it is a well written script and an entertaining story. It made the audience laugh, cry, and even wince a few times. I was surprised that I found myself tearing up at several moments of the film. If you think you are doing well and staying strong through the movie, don’t be fooled…….the last scene will get you.
Chris Pine delivers a great performance, but I think the most credit should be given to Elizabeth Banks. She has never been my favorite, but I liked her a lot in this film. Also, a wonderful introduction to Michael Hall D’Addario who plays Elizabeth’s son in the film. It always amazes me how such young kids can give such amazing performances. True talent this kid has. (Yes……that was a Yoda voice)
I wouldn’t say you should run to the theater as soon as it opens………….simply because it is not the type of movie to see on a big screen and ticket prices are climbing. But if you want to skip the blockbusters and sit in a quiet theater and enjoy a feel good film, this is the movie to see. It is definitely a movie to rent when it comes out.
MY FINAL SAY: Watch it!
