I really wanted to like this. I was hoping it would be something fun. Like a mix between Star Wars and Avatar. It just didn’t work.
First of all……………the acting was terrible (mostly from the lead actress). It also didn’t help that they had horrible dialogue to work with. I almost fell asleep during most of the talking scenes. And there were A LOT of talking scenes. The special effects were not as good as they should have been. You could tell that several were obviously green screen, which can usually be overlooked in more interesting films, but this was just bad.
The story as a whole was a good idea, however there seemed to be a lot of pieces missing in the film. I didn’t really feel the chemistry between the two leads and the story didn’t have enough for me to actually love the characters and care about them. I cared more about the ugly yet cute monster dog thing that kept following John Carter around, than I did for anyone else. There were a few scenes that were good, but everything leading up to it just made them underwhelming. I would have liked this movie WAY more if the music was good. It wasn’t.
This could have been a great film. It had bits and pieces of Stars Wars and Avatar……….but it just didn’t succeed in grabbing my emotions like the others did. All this film needed was better acting, better dialogue, and better music. But that is pretty much what a film is made up of. Thus………….not my favorite.
MY FINAL SAY: Save your money and rent it.
