I am not the biggest fan of scary movies, but recently I have started getting into them more. I am a HUGE fan of period pieces however, so this movie caught my eye. I also wanted to see a film other than Harry Potter, starring Daniel Radcliffe, to see if he really does have the acting chops to make it past the series.
Since I am not a hard core horror film fan, I will not be rating this movie based on how scary it is. Personally, I didn’t think it was as scary as other films I have seen, but there were a few moments where I was holding my breath. I went with my two friends and they just about crapped their pants every ten minutes or so. Basically, it depends on the person. I will say that it was more of a classic style horror film………..creaking floors, slamming doors, creepy shadows, bumps in the night. That sort of thing.
It was incredibly enjoyable. I loved the old fashioned feel to it. The costumes, the art direction, the music. It was great. And what do you know? Daniel Radcliffe is a good actor! I have high hopes for his future career. I think he will be the next Leo, and grow up to be a well respected actor. We shall see.
The story was interesting and pretty typical for a haunted house type movie. It reminded me a lot of The Others, which is one of my favorite scary movies. The nice thing about this film, is that it doesn’t try to gross you out with gore and violence. Yeah, there are some disturbing images, but nothing too gruesome. It is mostly just creepy as hell. Very creepy. Super creepy.
I recommend seeing it. People who aren’t easily scared probably won’t like it, but I think most people will appreciate it as a thrilling period piece. And what is more awesome than Harry Potter with an axe? I was secretly hoping he would pull out his wand and just yell “Stupify!” That would have been a bit random though. Maybe in the blooper reel? 🙂
MY FINAL SAY: Go see it!
