I may be the only person who didn’t like this movie. I really tried. I really tried to like it, but it just didn’t happen. Perhaps I don’t have the right mindset of a professional critic to accurately analyze the emotional depth of the characters or whatever. But from the perspective of a movie fanatic and all around normal person who can tell a good movie from a bad one, this was not the best. It wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t great. It definitely does not deserve all of the hype it is getting or nominations.
Sure…….George Clooney did a good job. Sure………there were some pretty funny parts. Sure………it was an emotional story. But there are about ten other films with a somewhat similar storyline I can name that were way better. This movie dragged on. I found myself bored the whole time and not really connecting to any of the characters. The music was nothing special, the cinematography was mediocre (thank goodness Hawaii is pretty to look at), and their was no resolution or redemption for the characters. I would go more in depth about that, but I don’t like to spoil things for people who haven’t seen it.
I know many people might disagree with me, but what are reviews for?
George Clooney won his oscar. This is not another performance that deserves one. Definitely not better than The Fassbender in Shame. I have not seen The Artist yet, but I can bet it is way better than this movie. And as much as I want it to, War Horse is not going to win. The awards season just doesn’t like epic masterpieces for some reason. At least not lately they don’t.
MY FINAL SAY: Skip it. Rent it if you must.
